Not only can plants attract insects, but they can also repel them too! When a plant's oils are extracted, an essential oil is formed. The many different compounds in the essential oil produce a very distinct smell, many of which insects despise. Not only do the insects not enjoy the smell of the oil, but it can affect certain parts of their body; such as interfering with their sensory, olfactory, & nervous receptors. This will then impair their judgement & ability to navigate their environment, making it difficult to find food (us).
